Fluorosis: Protecting Kids’ Smiles

There’s nothing more worrying than wondering whether you’re doing something wrong for your children that might lead to the direct result of serious consequences. When you hear mention that fluoride can potentially lead to a smile-related problem called fluorosis, you may feel ready to pump the brakes, ditch the use of this naturally occurring mineral, and find new toothpaste. We don’t suggest this! Instead, we invite you to learn more about this condition and how to avoid it. Fortunately, you’ll quickly discover that there’s no reason to feel too concerned.

What You Should Know

You should know that fluorosis is something that can affect your children from the time they begin consuming any amount fluoride (when they are babies) through the time they are eight years of age. You should also know that this is not related to teeth that are already present. The problem can affect (usually cosmetically) the teeth below the gumline. These are permanent, or secondary teeth, that follow baby teeth as they fall out.

Why You Don’t Need To Worry

The only reason fluorosis is going to become an issue for your child is if you don’t come in for dental visits and if you don’t follow our care suggestions. If you do pay attention to our suggestions and you don’t make choices for your child’s oral health on your own without consulting us, then your little one’s teeth will stay nice and healthy and will avoid exposure to too much fluoride.

How We Can Help

We will find out about the sources of fluoride that you are providing to your child. We will then determine whether your child requires more, if you need to back off, or if everything is just right. It’s a very easy means by which to prevent fluorosis.
