There are some exciting details about porcelain veneers that you’ve memorized and that you’ve memorized correctly. However, there may also be some information surrounding veneers that have gotten a bit muddied up, that are based on things you’ve heard from friends, and more that are not exactly right. Unfortunately, this type of misinformation may color the way you view veneers, either causing you to figure they’re not for you or giving you the false impression that they can do something they cannot. #1: About Their Structure
They don’t cover your entire tooth the way a dental crown does. You may think of veneers this way. However, the truth is that a porcelain veneer is a very thin casing that’s placed only on the surface of your tooth that is apparent when you smile. The rest of your tooth will remain uncovered. In addition, as mentioned, veneers are extremely thin and are there strictly for esthetic improvement but not to re-establish the structure of a damaged tooth.
#2: They Cannot Actually Replace Orthodontics
Porcelain veneers cannot actually replace orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign. What they can do is make very mild esthetic concerns that cause your smile to look spaced or crowded look better. For instance, we may be able to place veneers over your visible teeth and create a uniform, flush-looking smile. Veneers do not actually shift the placement of your teeth, however.
#3: They’re Not Highly Fragile
Porcelain veneers are strong and durable, though they are crafted from ceramic. Yes, they require you to treat them thoughtfully (which you must do for natural teeth, as well) but they are not highly fragile.
