A tooth that is severely damaged from decay, infection, or injury may need root canal treatment to save it from extraction. When the inner pulp and canal of roots of a tooth are exposed, root canal therapy must be done to remove bacteria. Without the treatment, the infection and bacteria can spread to the jawbone, other teeth, and even other parts of the body. By the time a problem needs a root canal to fix it, it can become quite painful. The only relief will likely come from a root canal or extraction of the tooth. Root canal treatment will save the tooth from being extracted.
Times a root canal may be necessary
When a cavity is caught early, the decay can be stopped with a dental filling. If it is not caught, the decay will progress through the tooth into the inner area of the tooth (the dentin) and deeper into the pulp and canals. Once the decay has reached that far, a root canal must be done to prevent the spread of infection. If an injury occurs in one or more teeth, it can instantly expose the inner area of the tooth. In a situation where a crack or chip is that large, a root canal may need to be done before restoration.
What to expect
The tooth and surrounding area will be treated with local anesthesia. If you are particularly nervous, you can receive dental sedation to help keep you calm throughout the procedure. The inside of the tooth will be cleaned to remove any infected areas. The tooth will be filled and sealed. Finally, a crown will cover the tooth to restore function and to protect the remainder of your natural tooth.
