Do you find that you know very well how to care for your teeth and gums? You even know what to make of some common symptoms? However, when the focus is on caring for your tongue as an extension of your oral health, all bets are off: You don’t feel like you know a thing about it! Not to worry, this is quite common among patients. Some helpful Q’s and A’s will guide you appropriately!
Questions and Answers
Question: What do I do when I accidentally drink something hot and my tongue feels a little burned?
Answer: Put it on ice, so to speak! When this happens, you can quickly curb inflammation and discomfort by holding it under cold water (or submerging it in a cup of cold water) for a few seconds. Then, avoid eating hot or spicy foods until it feels better.
Question: I keep trying to figure out whether I really do need to brush my tongue to protect my oral health or if brushing this part of my mouth is actually just a preference. Which is it?
Answer: You must brush it! Brush from the back (near your throat) toward the tip. Or, use a tongue scraper. Either way, you’re removing some of the bacteria in your mouth that are responsible for bad breath, tooth decay, and more.
Question: What should I think when I realize I have some indentations along the outer border of my tongue? Has my tongue always been this way?
Answer: You should see us about this symptom. It’s not an emergency but it’s definitely something you should bring up during your next visit. It likely points to bruxism disorder, an oral health concern that includes daily chronic clenching or teeth grinding (we can treat it).
